Topographic maps from the small areas 
I found a box of maps in a skid with the text: “Topographic maps from the small areas”.

Topos = place, graphia = writing.

Expressing a place in writing as a sculpture, as a poetic description of the layers of time in the ground, and someone who writes down the place.

When I was a child, my father showed me how a map is connected to a place. His fingers followed the lines drawn on the map as we made our way along the invisible border that separated our woods and fields from the neighbour’s land. The basic atlas that we studied at school opened the door to all over the world, and I used to fantasize about being part of stories set in different countries, eras, and continents.

However, the first maps in the story of the human species were not about land, but about the sky. The centre of everything was the nail star, and the sky circled around it. After that, the navel of the Earth was struck into the ground, first as a stone, then as a temple. Land was turned into a natural resource. It was classified and given a value. The idea of owning land became a universal institution, governed by two-dimensional map paper.

The idea of ownership has left its mark on the topography of the Earth. It is a plastic layer in the geological timekeeping of the Anthropocene.

Löysin roskalavalta karttalaatikon johon oli kirjoitettu: Topografisia karttoja pieniltä alueilta.

Topos = paikka, graphia = kirjoittaminen.

Paikan kirjoittaminen veistoksena, runollisena kuvauksena ajan kerroksista maassa ja ihmisestä, joka paikan kirjoittaa.

Lapsena isä näytti kartan ja paikan yhteyden, hänen sormensa seurasivat piirrettyjä viivoja, kun kuljimme pitkin näkymättömiä rajoja, jotka erottivat metsämme ja peltomme naapurin maista. Koulun peruskartasto avasi polut muualle maailmaan, unelmoin itseni tarinoihin eri maihin, aikoihin ja maanosiin. Ihmisen tarinan ensimmäiset kartat eivät kuvanneet maata, vaan taivasta, kaiken keskus oli naulatähti, jonka ympärillä taivaankansi kiertää.

Sittemmin maailmannapa iskettiin maahan, ensin kiveksi, sitten temppeliksi. Maa muuttui luonnonvaraksi, se luokiteltiin ja sille annettiin arvo. Maan omistamisesta luotiin universaali instituutio, jota hallittiin kaksiulotteisella karttapaperilla.

Omistaminen on jättänyt merkkinsä maan topografiaan, se on antroposeenisen ajan muovinen kerros geologisessa ajanlaskussa.
